Magic Beyond the Box: Autographs!
It’s another Thursday, and that means a new column for Magic Beyond the Box is up over at Quiet Speculation! This week I take a look at starting up an autographed Magic card collection- albeit one with a little bit of a twist. Stop on over and say hello!
Coldsnap: Kjeldoran Cunning Review (Part 1 of 2)
Our next stop on our visit to Coldsnap is the curious White/Blue weenie-control hybrid deck that is Kjeldoran Cunning. Whereas Aurochs Stampede was largely a thematic addition, revisiting one of the more noted creatures from the original Ice Age set, this deck is an entirely new creation featuring one of Coldsnap’s unique mechanics, ripple.
News: Mirran Resistance Undeterred
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Mirran Resistance Undeterred
Although widely believed to be categorically defeated, the voice of the Mirran resistance remains a steadfast presence on the plane. A very recent transmission intercepted by this agency seemed to indicate a small but resolute faction willing to continue the fight.
“…the struggle is far from over,” asserted the anonymous voice of Mirrodin. “…The infectors have become the infected…” While their location is unknown, their presence is still felt within the highest echelons of the Phyrexian High Command.
For the time being, it would appear that New Phyrexia has arrived at last. However, as one Mirran resistance fighter put it earlier today, “All may be one, but not all is lost.”

News: Phyrexia Announces Total Victory
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Phyrexia Announces Total Victory
The Machine Orthodoxy today announced total victory for the forces of Phyrexia and the utter obliteration of all that was Mirran.
“The Great Work is Complete,” said Grand Cenobite Elesh Norn. “The stain of imperfection which is Mirrodin has been scourged and in its place we have shaped the face of New Phyrexia.”
Jin-Gitaxius, Praetor of the Progress Engine, Augur to The Core continued, “The raw flesh we have at our disposal will allow us to continue The Great Synthesis unabated. Our destiny lies outside the crude battles between slavering beasts of which we have endured these many years. Through our experimentation will arise the strength of New Life.”
Other prominent Praetors were also in attendance. The Voice of Hunger, Vorinclex, took a defiant tone. “The struggle for survival is never complete. Wherever there is weakness, there is still the necessity of conflict. As the predator cannot abide prey, so do the strong feed upon the strong. Our purpose has only begun.”
Sheoldred, The Whispering One, declined conspicuous comment.
Praetor Urabrask was notably absent from the proceedings.

The above was sent to us by WotC and is not original to Lament. Big news, what’s everyone think?
Coldsnap: Aurochs Stampede Review (Part 2 of 2)
Excited to give our giveaway deck a preliminary run-through, Jimi wasted no time in selecting Beyond the Grave to go up against the Red/Green might of the Aurochs Stampede. When we last scouted the deck, Stampede represented itself as a very straightforward beats-style deck with a tribal twist.Would it have the numbers needed to run roughshod over the recursive tricks of the set’s most complicated collection of 60 cards?
Coldsnap: Aurochs Stampede Review (Part 1 of 2)
The story of Coldsnap is a story of riddles and mysteries. It may seem an odd time to begin the review of a Winter set at the outset of Spring, but as you’ll see there’s actually a certain resonance in doing so just days away from 01 April as well. The set was announced in October of 2005 to much fanfare, along with a very unusual story.
Coldsnap: Beyond the Grave Giveaway
Nothing huge this time, but as it happens we happen to be in possession of an extra, sealed copy of the Coldsnap theme deck Beyond the Grave, and would like to share with one of the Lament readers.
Shards of Alara: Naya Behemoths Review (Part 2 of 2)
It’s our final visit to the plane of Alara for the while (until we return in the future with Conflux), and it’s been a richly rewarding one. Although this is a set Sam much prefers over me, we’ve both found reasons to enjoy and appreciate the set. Sam’s delighted in the setting and memorable characters like Ajani and Elspeth, while I’ve found a word here to describe my personal colour-preference: Grixis.
And so it’s with some irony that for our final match we’ll have completely switched places, for I’ll be piloting Naya Behemoths while Sam sets up behind Grixis Undead. Being candid, I’ve probably looked forward to playing this deck the least as a matter of personal enjoyment- heavy creature decks don’t typically thrill me the way others do, but we’re both ready to see how they measure up. Can the heavy killpower of Grixis keep my behemoths at bay, or will Sam find herself reduced to a foul-smelling substance beneath the foot of one of my mighty gargantua- here are our notes.
MBtB: The Five Worst Intro Decks of Zendikar Block
A bookend to last week’s five best decks feature, this week I turn to the dark side in Magic Beyond the Box at Quiet Speculation and select the five worst offenders. You might be surprised which ones made the list, come check it out!
Whispers of the Muse: Prophylaxis’s “Phyrexian Poison”
Today’s Whispers of the Muse comes our way courtesy of longtime reader Prophylaxis, who’s looking to go competitive with an infect strategy.
I kept the core theme, but it has a lot of different card choices. This deck originated from the precon “Phyrexian Poison”.
Current decklist: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/bg-infect-55/
Comments:
Yup, it’s an infect deck. Never tested against FNM crowd, though I’m planning to (I don’t go to tournaments all too often, as I’m usually late for them). All of my card choices and the reason I picked them are on the link. I know I need:
Verdant Catacombs – Expensive.. 12 a pop makes me vomit.
Inkmoth Nexus – Expensive and hard to find. I would put only 2 or 3 in there because of mana problems.
Consuming Vapors – I’m debating whether or not to put this in or not. It costs good mana, but its effect is tremendous.
