2010-11 Precon Championships: Round 2 and the Leaderboard

by Dredd77

Welcome back to the midweek coverage of the 2010-11 Preconstructed Championships! This past weekend brought us some heated and furious action in the opening round of the Nagle Division as the first eight decks took to the field.

In the all-Dragon opener, Dragons defeated Scorch the World with Dragonfire, while the favoured Knights trounced the Mirrodin Besieged Intro Pack Battle Cries. This sets the stage for a Knights vs Dragons round two, each deck purpose-built to defeat the other. Who will earn victory’s favour and contest for the divisional banner?

Meanwhile, Deadspread staged a remarkable upset over fan-favourite Ravaging Swarm. Pregame predictions heavily favoured the Blue/Green infect and proliferate deck, but it was not to be. Deadspread’s going to keep its fortunes flying as it squares off against War of Attrition, the first Event Deck we’ve seen take the field. War of Attrition was the only deck to have every single reader choose it to win, and it didn’t disappoint. Fans of Deadspread will take heart that Devouring Skies at least pushed the match to three games, offering some small hope that the constructed-worthy Event Deck has some weaknesses that can be exploited.

After the first round, here is the prediction contest leaderboard!

As always, please let us know if there is a discrepancy below. This is but the first round of nine, so for those trailing behind or joining the party late, there is still plenty of time to catch up! Remember, a pair of Intro Packs are on the line- one from Magic 2012, and another from Innistrad!

Now for the Next Round

For those wanting to participate in the giveaway contest, you’ll find the next group of matches to predict here:

You’ll be making three predictions, meaning that three points are up for grabs (1 point per correct guess). Please predict the winner of each of the two matches featured above, then which of those two remaining decks you believe will win Game 25 and emerge as the winner of this season’s Nagle Division! If you’d like a little more background on each deck, we’ve linked them above for ease of reference.

The next round of exciting, full-tilt precon action goes up this Saturday, so all predictions will be accepted up to the moment before it posts. Good luck to all!

    Well, my predictions this time:

Game 17 : Knights (DD) ( Dragons vs Knights )
Game 18 : War of Attrition (NPHe) ( Deadspread vs WoA )
Game 25: War of Attrition (NPHe) ( Winner of Nagle Division )

Let’s hope for a bit more points than the previous round.

My Experience with Knights vs Dragons has the Knights winning so Game 17 will be knights
War of Attrition will handle anything Dead Spread so
    Game 18 War of Attrition.
Knights Vs War of Attrition will have it Ending with War Of Attrition the Victory simply because there is a more even build in War of attrition that it will statistically be superior.
So game 25 will be War of Attrition.

Knights vs. Dragons should be more or less a coin flip. I’ll go with Knights, as it’s a little better at punishing mulligans and bad keeps, but it could go either way, of course.

War of Attrition is just a better deck than Deadspread. Going with the event deck.

And I guess War of Attrition to win it. It’s got all those explosive starts; a pretty tough matchup for most of the decks in the bracket. Either of the other decks could win, but they’d basically need a nut draw or for War of Attrition to keep a bad hand.

Allright, up for the next round …

… and I guess, after a surprise win of Deadspread, there is nothing to gain agains the White Wielders. So my bets are:

    1. Knights
    2. War of Attrition
    3. War of Attrition

As always … curious for the results!

    Game 17 – Knights
Game 18 – War of Attrition
Game 25 – War of Attrition

Games 17 and 18 seem like easy calls, but the final game has me a little uncertain somehow. Of course, the event deck is far more consistent in its performance, so I’ll toss my vote to it like everyone else is. 😛

This bracket is certainly hard to call and any of the games can go one way or another, especially with so many 1-offs in the duel decks.
For fun I’ll pick dragons over knights – hopefully the dragons deck can pull it off again as it did during your review 🙂

    Go with the underdog 😀

Game 18 – War of Attrition
    Almost no chance for Deadspread.

Game 19 – War of Attrition
Dragons are too slow to win here.

I really don’t think this event deck is that good and knights can have some nut draws.

I gotta go with Knights, to defeat the Dragons that I felt would lose last round! Payback!

War of Attrition easily wins it’s next two matches.
