Reads: Meddling Gruul Goliaths

It’s Gruul Week all about the Magicsphere, and you know what that means! Over on Gathering Magic, I rebuild theĀ Gruul Goliaths Intro Pack deck, and put my foot right into a controversy!
The heart of the friendly debate is whether or not expensive uncommons like Rancor have a place in the budget-friendly Meddling series. In the past I’ve added playsets of them to decks, following the traditional Meddling rules, but today I do something a little different. Agree or disagree, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Speaking of feedback, another person who’d appreciate the gift of your opinion is Jimi. She’s made amazing strides on her Magic webstore since we teased it a couple of weeks ago, including a full platform overhaul. Even if you’re not in the market for singles or precon decks but still want to help, just giving your opinion on the layout and design would truly be a kindness. It’s a brave new world for her, and the EL community has long shown its capacity to offer constructive criticism that emphasises the constructive, not the criticism.
Thanks as always, and one last contest reminder. We have two giveaways going on right now, one for the Gathering Magic Meddlings, and the other for a Mercadian Masques Theme Deck. Lots of ways to win, and as always more right around the corner!
Duel Decks Sorin vs Tibault was just released! Write reviews please!!!
Your wish is my command!
I respect the compromise of doing 2 since it is reflecting the good probability of picking one or two up through booster packs (thus, not appropriate to ban like a rare/mythic), but the improbability of finding them in bulk common/uncommon boxes or being freely traded.
I’m fine with the full playset, though, because new sets commonly have $2-3 uncommons. Rancor isn’t currently costed all that differently from Burning-Tree (or, say, Boros Charm) and something else about these super-popular uncommons is they often make appearances in other preconstructed product – Rancor appears in Planechase, Archenemy, and a Duel Deck while the also-mentioned Path to Exile appears in Commander and Archenemy (and both also making FNM appearances). This would seem to make them more accessible, especially to an audience favorably predisposed towards precon products.
Hmmm… Does Jimi’s web store ship to Japan? I’d like to support it since I have been following your site for a long time now, advidly.
Sure does, and that’s greatly appreciated!
Thank you for the reply. Glad to hear it.
