2011-12 Precon Championships: Round 9 and the Leaderboard

And so it’s come to this. Thirty-two different preconstructed decks from the past season entered the arena, looking to prove which one of them would have the right to declare itself Champion. For the victor, eternal glory as its name was etched in the lore of the site. For the losers, a sinking into anonymity, as antagonist’s in another deck’s story. We’ve had twenty-eight different matches to get here, and now only four decks await their destiny.
This past weekend saw the conclusion of the last Division, the Lauer. The first match was between a pair of Intro Pack decks, Angelic Might from Avacyn Restored, and Dark Sacrifice from Dark Ascension. Although Dark Ascension had done well to trounce the Duel Deck of Nicol Bolas, it still found few predictors rallying to its banner. “Dark Sacrifice does not have the tools to conquer Angelic Might,” opined Limbonic_Art, “as it is slow and needs to bid its time to get its engine working. Angelic Might just needs to stall until the late game and overwhelm with its big angels.” That’s about what happened, as Angelic Might dominated the opener, and Dark Sacrifice choked in the next game, and the Angels advanced.
Our next match-up was another shocker, though it didn’t surprise as many as you’d think. Event Decks have been odds-on favourites this competition regardless the opposition, and not unfairly. Packing seven rares apiece and competitively tuned, they are capable of highly organised plays which the other decks can only envy. But that doesn’t mean they are invulnerable, as Humanity’s Vengeance found to its detriment. With potentially aggressive strings of fliers, Mystical Might was able to surrender the ground game and win in the air, where Humanity’s Vengeace had few answers. In watching the match unfold, mcc1701 remarked, “I think we can all learn about something here: blue/white is powerful in intro decks, primarily because of lack of flying defense in many decks.” Still, ten predictors tabbed Mystical Might for the win!
Then we moved to the final match on the day, the “All-Might” finals between Angelic Might and Mystical Might. As unlikely a scenario as it seemed, the Lauer Division was up for grabs between two Intro Pack decks. The Angels went up early, but couldn’t close the deal as the Illusions battled back to take two in a row, the win, and the Division.
Next, let’s have a look at the Prediction League. Jenesis still leads the pack, but Euphet16 is right behind! With three points still left to play for, a few others in the pack still have a shot as well. It’s worth a reminder here- as we might not have called it out at the start of the competition this season- as per custom, should there be a tie at the top at the end of the competition, the winner of the prize package shall be chosen at random- though in a break from the past the ‘runner up’ will be given a consolation prize (to be determined) as well as having their name written down in the immortal register of champions!
Here’s the table! Special mention surely must go to Diennea and Brad Hall, both of whom collected all three points on the day!
And now, here’s the final slate of matches. For those in the League, you’ll want to pick a winner for the Rosewater Conference (Game 29), Forsythe Conference (Game 30), and the overall Champion (Game 31).
Good luck to all!
Well my luck hasn’t been the best, but I predict:
Hold the Line
Spiriling Doom
Hold the Line
While some of the other event decks are not as polished, these two are both top-notch. Against eachother it will be close, and could go either way. If Doom can assemble a chump-blocking engine, then they will take over, but if not then Hold the Line will overpower them with pure aggression.
Hold the Line
Spiraling Doom
Spiraling Doom
Card advantage and attrition should trump aggro unless the mirran crusaders become supercharged by all the pump. Even than though, if birthing pod can produce chump blockers, there might be a delay long enough for doom to race.
Hold the Line
Spiraling Doom
Spiraling Doom
29) Hold the Line Very strong, nothing to say. This probably is going to win everything but…
30) Mystical Might … I follow my heart here…
31) Mystical Might. …hoping to close with a bang! Because MtG is also a game of luck!
29: Hold the Line
30: Spiraling Doom
31: Spiraling DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
Hold the Line
Mystical Might
Hold the Line
Hold the line
Spiraling Doom
Hold the Line
Hold the Line
Spiraling Doom
Hold the Line
I was really split 50/50 with who the winner is, but then I noticed that I have zero percent chance at first unless I go with Hold the Line.
Argh if only I hadn’t missed a round or two…oh well.
Game 29: Hold the Line
Game 30: Spiraling Doom
Game 31: Hold the Line
29: Spectral Legions
30: Mystical Might
31: Mystical Might
Two points behind, my path to victory is a treacherous one. Again, I embrace the underdogs…
Well no chance of winning but what the hey this is fun anyway!
Hold the Line for the first match
Spirling Doom but it will be close with the ghosts
Spiraling Doom, again this is going to be close because white has a couple of protection creature(The Crusaders) but I think the birthing pod is tough to beat.
Game 29: Hold the Line
Game 30: Spiraling Doom
Game 31: Spiraling Doom
29: Spectral Legions
30: Mystical Might
31: Spectral Legions
Against all odds. But I believe this is the only setup that can put me in first.

1. Hold the Line
2. Mystical Might
3. Hold the Line
29 Spectral Legions
30 Mystical Might
31 Tough call, um, uh, I’ll go Mystical Might, just because I own it, and used it the most over the others.
Reason I pick these is because flyers are cheap, and I don’t think Hold the Line has any flying defense.
I don’t want Spiralling Doom to win anymore, because Angelic Might lost. No more Doom vs Halo, because Spiralling DOOM, and angels have halos.
I also pick these winners because they both destroyed event decks. Who is to say that it won’t happen again? The reason why Spectral legions won was because of all the flyers and how Deathfed didn’t have any flying defense. I remember using hold the line, but I don’t think it has any flying defense, maybe some things to lock it down, but it really depends who gets all their creatures out first.
I think mystical might would win, because I feel it would be similar to the match against humanity’s vengance.
Mystical might would beat spectral legions because Mystical might did beat a deck full of angelic flyers.
Looking at intro packs that have beaten event decks, such as Spectral Legions, and Mystical Might. Do you also notice that both intro packs are the ONLY White/Blue intro packs?
29: Spectral Legions
30: Mystical Might
31: Mystical Might
Reason? In a word, Gamesmanship.
(In other news, the set of sealed Japanese Judgement theme decks I won for 6 dollars on eBay came in the mail today….pretty stoked on that one.)
All four for six bucks? That’s a great deal! I’ve noticed that if you depart from English, you can get some pretty good deals on eBay.

2 – Mystical might
