News: Dark Ascension Event Decks Announced!

by Dredd77

Today on the mothership, at the good ol’ Magic Arcana, the names and images of the two upcoming Event Decks were announced.

Gleeful Flames: Mono-Red aggro/burn

Spiraling Doom: Green/Black undying/beats

The decks won’t be out until 24 February, and we’re already looking forward to getting our hands on them!

I was just looking at green and black undying creatures for ideas with my Birthing Pod deck (“Poddy Time” :D), and noticed the CMCs of the 6 G/B undying creatures ramps nicely:

    CMC
    1 Wolf Pup (G)
    2 Strangleroot Geist (GG)
    3 Geralf’s Messenger (BBB)
    4 Sightless Ghoul (3B)
    5 Vorapede* (2GGG)
    6 Vengeful Vampire (4BB)

So at least they’ll have options for a nice curve in Spiraling Doom… (did I miss any in G/B?)

*mythic = probably not an option for an event deckā€¦

Strangleroot Geist is one hell of a creature, but being G/B, i don’t think they will include Geralf’s Messenger as one rare, since imo, it belongs to a mono black deck ( three black mana cost is too much for a two-colour deck).

I don’t know what to think about the red deck, Innistrad block doesn’t seem like a good one for red, but the red rare is pretty good for a red deck wins.

We might be surprised to open it up and find a load of M12 and Scars cards, which have better burn. The Vampire deck from M12 barely had any M12 cards in it, being comprised mainly of Zendikar block, so naything goes as long as the reult is Standard-legal. I’m excited to see what it contains.

You’re right! I didn’t think about it. M12 and Mirrodin’s burn is fine for me, let’s hope we get a nice red deck late this month!

I’m not sure if it would work, but I was actually hoping for a werewolf event deck this deck… =(

So was I, actually. I’d expected there’d be enough of them by the second set to make it a possibility.

I was actually thinking they might leave Werewolf and Vampire decks as a Duel pair this time around, since that’s an extremely popular trope in the theme (admittedly more in modern versions than the classic gothic-horror though).

I’m really curious as to what the mono-red will actually bring, but G/B sounds more entertaining based solely on theme (plus would probably contain more Innistrad goodness than the red deck). When do you think we might expect to learn the decklists of each?

We may see them as early as tomorrow. For Innistrad, the decklists went up on the mothersip (Magic Arcana feature) on 11 OCT before going on sale on the 28th- a difference of 17 days. With Dark Ascension’s decks coming out on 24 FEB, take off 17 days and it should be this week if the past is any guide.

Vampires/Werewolves Duel Decks? I love the idea, though I’d be surprised if they devoted so much real estate to cards so recently released. You could easily make an all-star Vampire deck, though the history of Vampires pre-M10/ZEN is a bit checkered. Sadly for the Werewolves, they have hardly any cards at all before INN- and the ones they do have before then are lousy. Duel Decks are also attractive for casual/Commander players for reprints, and they might lose an opportunity there as well.

I’m expecting good things from the mono-red deck as… well let’s be honest: mono-red aggro/burn is kind of a hard formula to fuck up. On top of that, alot of the ‘competitive’ red cards in standard right now are set at rare and not mythic so it shouldn’t be hard to work out something effective while maintaining the rarity limit. I’m predicting at least one of spikeshot elder and slagstorm at the least.

As for the G/B undying deck, I’m guessing something more midgame oriented and a tad stompy, with graveyard recovery for extra ‘can’t die’ tricks and maybe a slash of proliferate slipped in to boost your creatures up. Geralf’s Messenger is a shoe-in, and if possible I would love to get a Black Sun’s Zenith in there for the synergy it has with undying. A Green Sun would be nice too, but perhaps I’m just being greedy.

Speaking of greedy, the BBB cost of the Messenger makes it quite greedy indeed, so I’d be surprised if its in. Great card, though. Like you, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how these unfold!

I’d like to try the G/B one, I hope it’s intriguing. I think the undying creatures will have good synergy with a sac outlet, make it an aggro-combo, while some green ramp cards may also be put in to make it better. Too bad Geralf’s Messenger mana cost is only viable in a mono-black deck. But Dawntreader Elk and Altar’s Reap will fit nicely. Demonmail Hauberk could come as a surprise. Also Falkenrath Noble, a worse Kalastria Highborn, but with ramp it would be viable. For a midgame option, Gutter Grime?

About the werewolf event deck, could it be that Wizards save it until all the werewolves come out? We haven’t seen Tovalos yet, a possible legendary werewolf. Or they may save the werewolf event deck for the last, like what they did with Vampire Onslaught.

Those Inkmoth Nexuses do look nice, but those three (!) Torpor Orbs in the sideboard irk me. I would have preferred something like Chandra’s Phoenix instead.
