Event Decks: More Information Discovered!

There has been much speculation surrounding the Event Decks which will be released to coincide with the Mirrodin Besieged Game Day, and we are pleased to report that your sleuthing correspondent has learned that the decks will carry an MSRP of $24.95.

That there will be two of them is already known… but less so is that this is not a one-time release. That’s right- there will be Event Decks released for New Phyrexia/Mirrodin Pure as well!

ALthough undoubtedly more information will come to light in the weeks ahead, that these may well be recurring products has the Lament crew very excited!

Worldwake: Mysterious Realms Review (Part 2 of 2)

Everyone generally has a preferred archetype, either a colour scheme or deck strategy that they simply love to play. For Jimi, that’s increasingly been Boros, and when she found out that she had the potential to pilot one in a playtest she leapt at the chance. It would be an interesting matchup, pitting the aggressive Rapid Fire against the more methodical Mysterious Realms, but would make for a good contrast of styles. Bolstered by a custom tea blend from the local Irish shoppe we’d received for Christmas (the tea, that is, not the shoppe… alas), we took our customary places for a trio of matches, and here are our notes.

Guest Meddling: Upgrading the Coalition

I’m a fan of preconstructed decks, especially some of the non-intro products Wizards has been putting out. However, I take a different approach than Jay. I like to customize, tear apart, rebuild, refocus, and repurpose what I pull out of those boxes.

Sometimes I like to retool decks into easier-to-play, more-consistent versions of themselves, so that I can hand them to new players and explain them quickly. Other times I like to tinker with decks and fill them with bomby, splashy cards that make for lots of fun. Once in awhile I like to optimize for the kill. Either way, I feel like personalizing preconstructed decks is a great way to make them more interesting and more fun, utilizing some of the basic framework.

One of my favorite preconstructed decks in the past year was the Duel Decks: Phyrexia vs the Coalition set, because I loved that storyline and was thrilled to be able to play as Urza and Yawgmoth, re-enacting that climactic battle. Then I played the decks.

Worldwake: Mysterious Realms Review (Part 1 of 2)

We open our set review today with the story of Ken, because in some ways, the story of Worldwake is the story of Ken. Ken was a system software engineer from Hunstsville, Alabama, and Ken loved Magic. A self-described casual player, he was particularly enamoured of enormous Green beaters, and about once a month even managed to have an article published on Star City Games. Then, in 2006, Ken’s life was changed in a way so few of us have had the good fortune to experience. Ken (almost) landed his Dream Job.

Duel Decks- Garruk vs Liliana: Liliana’s Deck Review (Part 2 of 2)

After the epic clash last round that saw Garruk himself directly intervene to save his deck from ignominious defeat, we weren’t quite sure what to expect this go ’round. There are only so many miracles in a deck at any given time, and the thought was that Garruk had burned all his. Nevertheless, Sam volunteered to pilot his deck, based as it was on her most accustomed archetype: Big Dumb Beats(tm). That left me behind Liliana, and here are our notes from the confrontation.

2009-10 Precon Championships: Lauer Division (Part 1 of 2)

There’s a buzz in the air today as we begin our coverage of the 2009-10 Precon Championships: Lauer Division! With three divisions already decided, we’re down to the last one- the Lauer Division. As we work towards our ‘Final Four,’ we have just a few more rounds of grueling competition to get through to determine who will carry the banner as the Lauer Division’s champion, looking to take on Presence of Mind for the right to represent the Forsythe Conference in the finals!

Duel Decks- Garruk vs Liliana: Garruk’s Deck Review (Part 2 of 2)

One thing I derive a lot of personal satisfaction from is seeing Magic players improve their game. Jimi’s been playing a lot lately, between the site’s reviews and the Precon Championships, and more and more I’ve been finding her ever the more worthy opponent. In a game where even the pros admit they make multiple mistakes in each game, I’m always looking to improve my skill as well. As I’d find, piloting Garruk would put these skills to the test. We set the table for the customary three matches, and here are our notes from the clash.

New Year’s Day State of the Site Address

Welcome to 2011!

At the start of a new year, it’s always useful to take a moment and reflect upon the one that’s passed, and having missed our site’s six-month anniversary, I thought it fitting to do so here.

First of all, a huge thanks to all the members of the Precon Community who have made Ertai’s Lament as successful as it’s been. We really didn’t know what we were getting into when we put up our first post on 03 June, but since that time we’ve gone from a few-hits-a-week site to one that averages somewhere between 500-1000 a day. It was great to see so many folks out there have the same interest and passion as us! Certainly, we could not have done it without all the thoughtful feedback we’ve recieved from all of you.

On that note, here are a few things on our minds as we enter 2011.
