News: First Article Up at Quiet Speculation!
Following my announcement that I’d be writing a weekly column for the new, revamped Quiet Speculation, I’m proud to announce that the first article is up! Magic Beyond the Box will be a weekly series, appearing each Thursday. Today’s piece focuses on the connection between the two releases of the Premium Deck Series, and the greater R&D principle that they illustrate. Thanks for all the support, and check it out!

Thanks for the heads up, will read it when I have a chance! Keep up the great work!
I noticed that after QS got it’s new articles, the website has been very busy (got the Firefox error). Is there a glitch or is it simply because of the mass of people?
I’d love to think it’s a mass influx of eager readership for all the various offerings, but my understanding is that it is an issue with the webhost, which may be exacerbated by the traffic. The new site has certainly attracted some attention, though!
Great article! I’ve wondered why the pre-con decks seemed badly put together. So, what’s next week’s article going to be about? Do we, your loyal readers, get a sneak peek? 🙂
Great article, and fantastic website! Dave over at Moonlight gave me a link to your site here and I absolutely love it! I just recently got back in to Magic and have found a lot of great advice and info here through your articles. I’ve talked my fiance in to playing (which was no easy task), and to make it fair we generally stick to pre-con decks since she isn’t as crazy about it as I am. Needless to say, your stuff is great and I look forward to more!
Glad to hear it, and welcome! It’s great that your fiancee sounds like she’ll at least meet you in the middle. I know I couldn’t do half of what I’m doing without the enthusiastic support of the wife! What decks have you all taken to playing?
She enjoys playing with the Elspeth deck from the Duel Deck set, which is a pretty good pre-con. I pretty much play with anything, however lately I’ve been using the Fire and Lightning premium as well as the Tezzeret deck just to switch things up. We started playing DotP on Xbox and she really liked the Garruk deck Teeth of the Predator, so I bought that for her and picked up the Eyes of Shadow deck for myself. They are a bit different from their Xbox counterparts, but we’re both excited to play them.
How about you and your wife, what are you guys both enjoying right now?
I’m actually quite fortunate, as my stepdaughter (Sam) plays as well. All three of us are elbows-deep in the usual playtesting, and then all the more so with the Precon Championship games as well. The wife is absolutely in love with Strike Force, the Red/White Planechase deck. It was the only one we didn’t already own, so we had to pick it up for use in the Championships, and not a soul besides has had a chance to use it! Sam’s flexible, though she’s eager to get back in with Constructed after the relentless preconning.
As for me, I’ve yet to brew a single Standard deck since Scars, which is pretty shocking for me. I think I’m still mourning Cruel Control rotating out.
I was rather taken with the Fire & Lightning deck, because I used to run Sligh back in day. Jackal Pup gave me some warm & fuzzy nostalgia. Elspeth/Tezzeret is fun, too, though perhaps a bit prone to blowouts in either direction. Looking forward to Dragons vs Knights!
