2007-08 Precon Championships: Round 6 and the Leaderboard
After a slight bump in the road, the Preconstructed Championships are back on track. It will take much more than a hetic week to sideline the power and the glory of a season’s worth of precon decks battling it out with eternal glory and supremacy, as they look to scribe their name in the book of champions.
Yesterday saw two matches play out on the sands of the arena floor. First, Tenth Edition mono-White deck Cho-Manno’s Resolve pitted its combat skills against the recursive shenanigans of Death March. The Eventide deck was the clear favourite, with very few staking their fortunes to Cho-Manno and his revolutionary zeal. In making his pick, Errtu drew upon past experience. “I have seen too many core decks win against all odds,” he noted, “I’m betting this one will be the same.” Although it went to three games, Resolve managed to get the job done when it assembled its brutal combo of Cho-Manno, Revolutionary enchanted with Pariah.
Next up we had another Eventide deck, Life Drain, going up against Shadowmoor’s Army of Entropy. This time Eventide wouldn’t be denied. With our predictors more or less evenly split, Life Drain shut out its opponent in two straight, winning with a silly amount of life. Credit to two of our competitors, necrotyr and Triumph, who managed to pick up both points on the day. This managed to move them up to the top of the table, but we still have yet to see one person break out of the pack. Still, Triumph’s pair of points let him draw level with the leaders.Â

Yes, I like Life Drain a lot.
21: Life Drain – Plenty of hard removal, ways to beat the pacifism, and big fliers to clog the skies. Life Drain takes this one down no questions asked
22: Kamahl’s Temper – While Superabundance has some pretty wicked good threats with decent card draw it has no real removal to speak of. Never underestimate a mono red deck that packs fistfuls of haste and burn when it goes up against a removal-less opponent. Temper slams this one home.
27: Life Drain – Anyone who has played a lot of mono red knows there is nothing worse then a deck that gains a ton of life as your opponent. And when that is the whole point of the deck, forget about it. Life Drain FTW.

21) Life Drain. Resplendent Mentor is a brutal trump that Cho-Manno has no way to get rid of, while the same can’t be said of Pariah against Life Drain’s robust removal suite. Worst case scenario, if Life Drain manages to stabilize the board, it can pull out a win by decking.
22) Kamahl’s Temper. Speed and burn will prevail over a gimmicky slow deck.
27) Life Drain. Although Temper is a more focused construction than Army, it’s still at a disadvantage against a deck that can gain colossal amounts of life. Kamahl might steal a game if its signature legend hits the board, but without the Evincar’s tutoring power I don’t see it happening twice.

21: Life Drain. Pariah only stops damage — not life loss — so even if that combo gets assembled, I think the Eventiders can still take it.
22: Kamahl’s Temper. Kamahl’s fire and friends should be too fast for Superabundance to stabilize.
27: Life Drain. Like Jenesis said, lifegain is the bane of a burn deck. That said, it’s no gimme — Life Drain’s pilot will have to tread carefully around hasty creatures and burn.
Game 21: Life Drain has a superior removal package, with several spells that can eliminate the redoubtable Cho-Manno. It also has direct damage. And a couple of beefy flyers to help compete up above. Cho-Manno still has the advantage of smaller deck = greater consistency, but I think Life Drain takes the win.
Game 22: Superabundance…huh. I guess it just wins by building up a huge swarm of creatures? I don’t see much in the way of win conditions (Invert the Skies, I suppose). Kamahl’s Temper, though, wow! Some of the best burn / removal I’ve seen in a precon. Kamahl’s Temper for the win.
Game 27: So, Life Drain vs. Kamahl. I can easily imagine this going either way…Life Drain wins a long game, Kamahl wins quickly, Life Drain has remove and direct damage and air power, Kamahl has burn and haste, Life Drain has life gaining, Kamahl small-size consistency…SO…I rolled a d20, even for Life Drain and odd for Kamahl. I got an even number… I pick Life Drain to eek the win over the nonetheless high-quality Kamahl precon.

G27: Kamahl’s Temper. If they were both 60 card decks I might have gone with Life Drain. I’m hoping Kamahl has quicker access to his haste and burn
21: Life Drain
Life Drain is a solid deck with many good elements. It also has some filler and unimprisive cards, while Cho-Manno has more consistency by being a 40-card construction. Life drain is till packed with impressive removal in Unmake, Recumbent Bliss, Soul Reap, and the very conditional overpriced Safe Passage that is Endure. Impressive life-gain and an air army will prevail over Cho-Manno, but it might take the match to game three.
22: Kamahl’s Temper
The tenth edition theme decks have been quite impressive, this one has a removal suite not only as good as blacks Evincar’s Tyranny but could be better since it can also finish off a wounded opponent. Superabundance is not a bad deck but it does not have any direct removal in the simic colors. All it has are tap effects and some sorcery-speed combat tricks, it will be hard to prevail over a 40-card deck with alot of burn. Easy win for the red deck
27: Kamahl’s Temper
I will be honest, I love Life drain and want it to win but I am going the safer bet here. Although red decks hate lifegain strategies, it has a total of 7 pieces of removal, 5 which can finish off an opponent on the verge of death. Beacon of Destruction and Blaze have the potential to be the largest and can get rid of Divinity of Pride or Archon of Justice. Kamahl himself is a lightning bolt on a stick, if he stays he will be able to kill all of Life-Drain’s targets one by one. The real prolem that Kamahl will face is life drain’s 2 rares and the impressive 6-card removal spells that Life Drain has. Prodigal Pyromancer and Bogardan Firefiend will also kill off all the little one toughness creatures Life Drain has. The tenth edition decks have been so solid that it will be hard to win against them, especially the monstruosity that Kamahl’s Temper is.
