[...] Lucky for us, the preconstructed world is a much more controlled environment, and today’s foray into the dark world of artifact lands and affinity- courtesy of the Bait & Bludgeon theme deck- likely won’t break the format and drive us from the game. Indeed, much of this deck should already be familiar ground, even if we weren’t playing during the original Mirrodin. The mana Myrs have resurfaced as a prominent fixture in Scars of Mirrodin, as have the Spellbombs. Additionally, many of Bait & Bludgeon’s characteristic spells and creatures have popped up in Planechase (Metallic Dreams), Archenemy (Assemble the Doomsday Machine), and even in Duel Decks (Elspeth vs Tezzeret).
This deck actually looks pretty interesting to me because of theme. As you say, it really does feel like it's "Elspeth's" deck, so to speak, and what's intriguing about that is that the deck manages that feel without resorting to explicit art or flavour text references. Jace vs. Chandra in particular put a lot of references to the titular planeswalkers on the cards, but looking at this one, frankly, Elspeth is all over the place. Kithkin? Kor? Human soldiers? Even a reprint from Portal: Second Age? There's no single set that it's drawing from, and no single aesthetic theme.

Yet it does seem like something she would play. The soldier mechanical theme is by far the most prevalent, but one idea I'm toying with is taking this deck and retooling it to be a knight tribal deck, not a soldier tribe. After all, the planeswalker card is called 'knight-errant', the preview card for Scars was a knight, as I recall the story Elspeth led a band of knights on Bant, and you can't say that, for example, Knight Exemplar does not feel like a card Elspeth would use, mechanically.

You know, I just ran the three-of with Jimi to test out the decks for our next write-up, and playing the Tezzeret deck this time I have to say your conclusions are spot-on. Jimi took two of three (three of four if you count our first "friendly" game we use to get used to the decks before we actually record the game), and despite its flaws I've found the Tez deck just that much more fun.

It's a taste thing, though- Jimi's always enjoyed White Weenie/swarm strats, and this deck fit her hand in glove.

Like the Tezzeret article, great work. I definitely agree with you on this entire article. I have been playing these duel decks, and although it seems to best the Tezzeret deck most of the time, I really don't like playing with it because the only uber card is Elspeth. Maybe its just me but I love the feeling I get when I play Steel Overseer and Pentavus.
